Miller's Testimonial
Barbara Miller earned her master's degree in Communication Sciences from the College of Health Science & Professions at Ohio University in 1973. Ms. Miller says that she gives charitably to institutions that are effective at reaching the people they are meant to help, and she feels that an Ohio University education prepares students well for their future. She received an excellent education in Athens that afforded her a productive and rewarding career. She feels grateful to her alma mater and hopes to help other students achieve similar success.
Ms. Miller decided to support the program in Hearing, Speech, and Language Sciences at Ohio University through a Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT). A CRUT enables a donor to contribute highly appreciating assets to a charitable organization like The Ohio University Foundation without paying capital gains taxes on the assets while enjoying an income tax deduction. Meanwhile, the charity pays the donor a fixed percentage of the trust's value for life. Upon the donor's death, the university benefits from the remainder of the trust's value.
A CRUT allowed Ms. Miller to accomplish both her charitable and financial objectives with no strings attached. By making a gift now, she is able to enjoy a lifetime of income. Later the university benefits from the remainder. She designated the donation to support the program in Hearing, Speech, and Language Sciences. She anticipates that the program may use the money for a scholarship fund, a special program, or for any other departmental need. Due to the combination of lifetime income and charitable remainder, she says, "A CRUT is a gift that gives twice."
